December 31, also known as New Year’s Eve is one of the global celebrations because it marks the last day of the Gregorian calendar, before the New Year. Countdown to the New Year is very common no matter where you are in the world.

In most of the countries, people gather in the evening and celebrate the last day of the calendar year. Drinking alcoholic beverages, dancing, eating and watching light fireworks are the most popular way of celebrating the new year. New Year’s Eve is a day of mixed feeling as on the one hand, everyone is about to welcome the New Year and already made plans for the upcoming year. On the other hand, some people feel nostalgic as they recall on the events that happened in their lives in the last 12 months.

One thing which is also very common during New Year’ Eve is making resolutions for the upcoming year. Although we all know, what happens to it after 1st week of January. Many people through gatherings or small parties at their homes. Some people tune into television to follow the countdown to New Year’s Day. In some places, New Year’s Eve is a public holiday such as in Latvia, San Marino and the Philippines although New Year’s Eve is not a public holiday in countries like Canada, Uk, USA and Australia. Japan is a country where New Year’s Eve is a government holiday.

Pope Gregory XIII introduced the calendar in the year 1582, which was quickly accepted in some areas of Europe, but not used in many countries until a few centuries later. It is also to be noted that calendars of Hindu, Jewish, Islamic, Chinese are different from that of the Gregorian Calendar. Midnight between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day is often celebrated by firecrackers, and most people drink champagne, wine etc. with some sweets and cakes.
